What style of bike are you looking for? Sport, cruiser, etc.?

I've been eyeballin' the Honda Shadow VLX h: . I also like the older Kawasaki Vulcan.

find an old GS or CB 650 or less. They're usually less than $500 and you'll sell it for that too

oh, good bike...

Honda Hawk GT 1988-1991

it's a 650 v-twin. it's tuned a bit differently than your average 600cc inline-four sportbike, they're not as fast, but fast enough.

I had bought one for $1,500, sold it a few months later for $3,100

It's an amazing bike, good for starting out on, and if you want to fix it up, you can. they hold their value well

here was mine...

Good starter bike from what I've researched. I was so close to getting one, picked it out and had the dealer hold it for me and all. Finance company tried to screw me, so I had to walk away from it. My resolution for '07 will be to get my SV (or whatever else I can find) and ride by next summer.

You do NOT want to buy new your first time. Think about when you are learning. There is more of a chance of going down. Do you really want to scratch a nice new bike?

As for the $3K or below, there are CBR600F4's that you can get in that range...hell I have even seen F4I's that you can talk down to $3K. It all depends on location.

Get an older bike that it wouldn't matter if it goes down.

The other thing to check is comfort of you sitting. Do your legs/knees tuck into the tank naturally, are you having to lean over too much? etc...
