So you are saying Dr Phil is a better person for exploiting people on public tv and humiliating them, making them cry and then giving them what passes for advice and sending them on their way, is somehow better than the guy who puts no pretense and pays these guys to do what they probably would have done for free anyways, films it and exploits it to the web?

Dr Phil gives some yuppie shit advice about not masturbating in his wifes underwear. The yuppie shit goes home and follows the advice and in less than a week he is spanking it in his wifes underwear. The difference now is he has depression because the whole world knows about it now so the problem is compounded and Dr Phil is on to the next cash cow subject for a show.
Bumfight guy goes out and talks to these street people and figures them out a bit giving them companionship for a bit. The guy who pulled his teeth got a bottle of booze out of it...that was what he wanted, didn't care about curing his lifes woes. The guy eating the frog got 20 bucks, again it's what he wanted and what he got.
The difference is in the pretense used to get such footage and the amount of violence in it.
Dr Phil wants a person to cry on stage, have horrible dark secrets they reveal and act truly repentent when they leave. Almost as if a huge revelation has been dropped on them and released the weight from them. You said yourself he dispenses nothing more than common sense answers which any schmuck could give in any given situation.
Bumfight guy doesn't use any of these pretenses, he approaches and straight up tells them he wants to give them money, booze, smokes or whatever if they do X event. The bum is better off because they have what it is they want at the time and goes about the life they know not feeling shamed and no worse for wear than they would have been.
