I'm not going to build a computer....not going to not going to not going to. I guess I'll check out the Dell site...just didn't want to have to ship one, pay for shipping, and wait for a computer.

You know I hear people talk shit about Emachines all the time because of what they have heard about them, I have owned one for 4 years that is still working fine on all the stock equipment except vid card.

Reformat and install XP or XP Pro and an Emachine will be the biggest bang for the buck hands down IMO.

For what you need, you can get an inexpensive Dell.

werd.

Besides the power supply giving out and needing a reformat, this thing is pretty solid despite what my sister does on it

why not try getting a new master Hard drive? sounds like that is the problem

Because my computer is already 6 or 7 years old...just time for a new one. Computers are so cheap now, it's more cost effective for me to get something newer. It's always been slow running lots of apps at the same time, and it's been making noises lately. I'd like something newer that is faster, yet runs cooler and quieter...my current box turns my room into a sauna.

I priced out a cheap dell...ended up coming to $600 w/o monitor.

For that price, I could get the Emachine I posted above, and still get a 20" widescreen LCD. However, it's a slightly older processor...P4 with Hyperthreading, 3.06ghz, 512 RAM. The Dell has the Core Duo 2.8ghz and 1gb RAM. How much of a difference would there be between those two processor and memory setups? If I upgraded the Emachine to 1gb, would it be close to the Duo in speed?

duo > solo cpus.... but 3.06 and 2.8 duo is not a huge difference.... unless you use it for intense gaming/editing/etc

All I'll really be doing is music, internet, dvd burning, and some light photo editing....nothing major. I'm not trying to spend a thousand bucks on a computer.

Check costco for deals for bundles. Honestly I attempted to fix my friends blown e-machine. It's the hardest thing ever to work in. The case is tiny and all the components are extremely hard to replace if need be. For HP/Compaq my sister has a compaq laptop...it's been in and out of service around 8 times in the last year. She has an extended warranty that's the only thing saving her. This is her school laptop btw so she doesn't use this on a regular basis and it still breaks.

Yea, I'm posting from an HP/Compac dc7600 minitower right now. It's a perfectly fine machine.
