EDIT: Is it Chrysler then?
Chrysler has owned Jeep since 1987 and it's been DaimlerChrysler since 1998...so I'd say Chrysler. But that engine has been around forever.

I was kinda interested and it was AMC built from when AMC owned chryler:

Available engines:

1984-1996 2.5 L AMC I4, 121 hp-125 hp
1984-1986 2.8 L GM 60° LR2 V6
1985-1987 2.1 L Renault turbodiesel I4 (initially sold in US and until 1993 in Europe)
1987-1990 4.0 L AMC I6, 173-177 hp Renix Fuel Injection
1991-1996 4.0 L AMC "High Output" I6, 190 hp Chrysler Fuel Injection
1994-1996 2.5 L VM Motori turbodiesel I4 (sold in Europe)

But you were right that it had a 2.8L GM engine at one time. I had no idea

I will say from experience that Jeeps hold up very well. I had a 1999 Cherokee that never gave me any problems, my dad has had a 1994 Cherokee and a 1996 Grand Cherokee and they've been flawless, and my mom currently has a 1996 Grand Cherokee with 220,xxx miles and it's never let her down.

The old ones yes. But the newer Grand Cherokee is horrible...I don't think I've ever talked to a single owner that hadn't had the truck break down on them at least once. I talked to two guys in one day that had them, one couldn't drive above 15MPH because his tranny was messed up and the other couldn't drive more than 5 mins without the engine overheating h:

At that mileage...

rear main seal needs replaced
Check hatch for leaks and seals all around
Check door alignment

Tranny should be good but I am skeptical of those engines with that kind of mileage. If it was taken good care of mechanically then it probably has a few more years in it and would push to 200k...if it hasn't been cared for mechanically then it may just leave you stranded on the drive home.
