Default Linux v.Class

For my Data Structures class, we're going to be doing things on Linux. What distribution should I get to use? I've never really used it before and I'm not sure what the differences are.

We're using SUSE in our labs, is that a good one to get for my computer or should I try a different one? My teacher gave us some recommendations on what to use. Fedora, Ubuntu, SUSE, Debian, and Gentoo.

yes. ease of use, ease of installation, installation of apps, tightening it down security wise, etc. This is what distinguishes different distros. Comes down to personal opinion.

SUSE is pretty good, and since its also in your lab that would be a good choice.

Don't get Gentoo.

Are you just going to be compiling on it or do you want to actually use the system?

I know its going to be the primary OS for our class so I'll be at least programming on it. I'd like to use the system and see how I like it and everything.
I expect in class we'll be using it for other things.
