Default Figure this one out....weird car problem.

It might be long because I have to include a lot of details that might affect the answer.

-1998 Honda Accord 180k miles.

A couple months ago the car overheated when there was about an hour of stop and go traffic. Mostly stop. We pulled into a gas station, and coolant was boiling in the overflow tank. After it cooled, I opened the radiator cap and filled it with coolant. Then the car wouldnt start up. So I had to jump it. Drove it home with the heater on blast, and it was fine.

We replaced the thermostat with another old one. Figured it was that because I dont remember the fan ever being on. Car drives fine for a while. No heavy driving, no traffic.

Then a week ago we drove the car to the hills. It was a pretty long climb, the car overheated. Driving downhill had no problem. So now we figure the fans arent coming on. Only 1 fan comes on. The other one is stuck :dunno:  The fan gets replaced with an used one. It turns on.

Tonight, the car overheats again during normal driving. No traffic or heavy driving. Just on the streets. When the hood was popped, the coolant was leaking from the overflow. After it cooled off, levels were back to normal. However, it was reported that the level in the overflow tank was about 1" above the max line prior to the overheating.

.....

I am kinda lost as what it can be...and dont know enough to check anything else. I am thinking the old parts might have something to do with it. But that it all

Air in coolant system? Drain, refill, and bleed system.

Any leaks? Coolant level stays the same? Both fans now turn on?

How can I test that? If I drive and let the car get to normal temps, then let it sit and idle, the fans should come on right? THere are 2 fans, both should come on?

How can I test that. I will test the fans by letting it idle. Both fans should come on?

I will bleed system this weekend. Is a drain and refill required? h:

No major leaks. Level stays the same. Not 100% about both fans coming on.

Will, I'll scan in my Accord 4 banger manual in for you tomorrow with instructions on how to test the switches.
