So I might be recalled to active duty...

Either or, I would do it without question....

I would actually welcome it. I loved the military, the pay just wasnt up to par.

By this point, it's gotta be more about the guys you serve with, huh? I hear many stories about guys going back to help out their buddies vs. the cause.

The cause is not the issue at all. I was given a lawful order, I will follow it.

I miss everything except the pay and the bullshit. Other than that, I would be in the military the rest of my life.

I thought you were out. Or are you still in? How does the recall work exactly?

When you enlist, you sign up for 4 years Active and 4 years Inactive Ready Reserves. Once you do your 4 years active, you are basically a civilian unless some shit like this happens.

Pete and I are both out, but you sign an 8 year commitment, either 4 active - 4 inactive, 6 active -2 inactive. and so on.

You can get recalled at any time, no matter how long you are out.

It is easier to get called back if you are inactive reserve, but it is possible to be called back after you have fulfilled your 8 year commitment

Maybe you could go reserve to avoid the IRR. I have a friend whos doing that. Go to a non-deployable unit.

That blows. I have heard that Human Resource Command will grant extensions for higher learning. Also, I would think that if your college accepts federal money they would be more understanding of military obligations. Maybe the Dean there needs his cage rattled by the district congressman.

FWIW I signed up for a second tour just to avoid that scenario. Worked like a charm.
