canon 350d
I got to play around with this camera in walmart while the woman was checking out some clothes... now I'm really interested.

I currently have this one: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonydscs75/
Sony DSC-S75, It's old and for it's time was pretty high tech. By todays standards, you can get it for less than $100 on ebay with no accessories.
The Canon has quite a few advantages over the Sony. I really liked how fast it started up and was ready to take pictures, how fast it could take pictures. Even though it didn't have a CF card in it, it did show a preview of pictures it took. Everyone was clear and sharp, if only on the 1.8" LCD screen. My Sony regularly doesn't get very clear pics on the first or second try and for Point and Shoot, really leaves a lot to be desired.
With the things I have for my sony, I'm looking to put it up on ebay and hope for $200-300 and put that towards the Canon Digital Rebel XT 350D.
I haven't gotten a chance to play around with other dSLRs yet, but I bet they would also be lightyears ahead of my old Sony. Anyone here have this one or something similar and have some comments on it?
I might sell my sony now and wait a few months for the price to come down on the Canon. $700 is a bit more than I was really looking to spend, but this camera seems to really excel where the Sony let me down.

I also had the 300d. it's a decent camera and for most buyers the kit lens is all you'll ever need.

Most people seem to quite like this camera. I'm mostly a Point and Shoot person
h:But I like to be able to get great quality pics from a point and shoot but also have the options there to get other things.
nikon d70. you can get very nice pics from point and shoots. most of the p&s these days take very nice pictures in 85% of the situations.

I wonder if walmart would have a problem of me putting in my own CF card and snapping a few instore shots so I can see what they look like on my home monitor. :rick:
they shouldn't. most camera stores let you do that.

350d has really good image quality in a dinky little plastic toy form factor. Canon also pisses me off that in exchange for their good sensors, the cheapest model that offers a damned spot meter is the 30d. Aside from that it's a solid camera and if you're stepping up from a p&s you probably would love it. You may also want to check out a Nikon D70, the image quality is nearly as good, it doesn't feel like you're holding a toy, and it has some more advanced picture-taking features. The prices on the D70 have come down a lot and now with the D80 coming out they should drop even more. Hell the D50 is probably worth a look also. Pentax has some good models out, the K100D has built-in image stabilization. The Sony (a.k.a. Minolta) A100 also does if you want to spend some more money.
I would only really stick to lookin at Canon, Nikon, Pentax, and Sony/Minolta. How much money you lookin to drop on the body, and how many lenses you think you'll pick up?
