depends on how hard the bus accelerates. i once threw something up in the air in my car right before i floored it in 1st gear, and the object flew into the backseat. like 98coupev6 said earlier, it's the acceleration that'll knock it back, not velocity.

Yeah.

When you get pushed back in your seat when you accelerate...let me rephrase that...if you've ever been in a non-Honda with a lot of torque you get pushed back in your seat when you accelerate. That's not because the seat is keeping you from flying out of the car, it's because of the acceleration. Everything in the car is accelerating at the same rate, it's just all bolted down.

It's not that it gets knocked back. It's just that The object is in the same space as it was before however the object surrounding it has moved.

Uh no. The air in the bus is moving too. It gets knocked back because of the accelerative forces.

The air compresses and moves out of the way.

Assuming the bird does not move, The back of the bus will hit the humming bird because there isn nothing to apply force to the bird and move it. But if you are sitting on the bus, It will look as if the bird hit the back because the relative velecity of the bus to you is zero and the R.V. of the bird to you will be be negative making it look as if it is moving backwards instead of you moving forward.

Tie a ping pong ball to a string and attach it to the roof of your car. It will swing back .

...which, as I've said 4 times, is because of the force of acceleration.
