Oh, I see the advantage to the stand alone DVD recorders..they program like VCR's...that would be nice. Can you get DVD's that are like CD-RW's that can be used over and over? Some of the shows that we would tape wouldn't be shows we'd want to keep...just stuff we couldn't be at home to watch....

:eh: TiVo = DVR.

now if you mean the cable company DVRs > TiVo. well, that's subjective. there are pros and cons to each.

the TiVo suggestions can be disabled. but i actually like that feature, and it works well. it makes suggestions depending on how you rate shows. the more you rate, the more accurate it'll be.

regardless, whatever you set to record always takes priority. also, setting things to record is much superior on the TiVo. there are many more options on how to go out and search, etc. the GUI as a whole is more intuitive, easier to use, and more robust, as far as i can tell. (i'm comparing to the comcast DVR, of course. i assume cox is similar.)

the negative? with my TiVo anyway, it controls the cable box by sending commands to tell it to change the channel. so it's an extra annoying step that makes the channel change take that much longer (if you're watching live TV). however, it never fails to control the box accurately. with a cable company DVR, obviously it works as it's own self-contained cable box. that's my only gripe.

with any of these, you'll pay a subscription fee. if you want a DVR for free, you'll have to build one out of a PC, and get the right software.

most of these can take DVD-RW (or +RW), but it'll say so for sure on the box. DVD ReWritables are a bit more expensive than the one use only DVD-R's.

$15 for 50 pieces (DVD R)

I see, I see. I think I'll end up opting for a name brand DVD recorder (stand alone) that can record on DVD-RW's.

Anyone have suggestions for those? Or suggestions on other gifts for a guy who is turning 25?

What about a DVD recorder with a built-in hard drive to store stuff you've recorded w/out the DVD's?

We just had a weekend away and we have 3 more planned for August...I'm throwing him a surprise bday party for his bday weekend. He already has an mp3 that he likes (creative zen micro) and he doesn't like hand held video games....likes his ps2 on the big screen. (Some day I'll get him ps3 haha)

Yea, I don't really wanna get an xbox....I want to wait for the ps3.

So maybe I'll splurge and get that DVR with the HD built in...seems pretty cool. But for $300 I wouldn't have much of a budget left to get him anything else....what is cool and CHEAP?
