For some time now I have been throwing around the idea of HIDs for the MR2. Get out now if you're going to be an asshole....

Now, in order to have HID's for the 2 I need to replace my sealed-lamp units with H4 accepting lenses (Hella E-Code). Then the HID kit I would choose would be an H4 bulb. I've read other MR2 owners who have done this enjoy the extra light but still get flashed sometimes because the light scatters much more than a projector bulb - they then they say "I wish I got the bi-Xenon kit." What's the difference between the normal HID and bi-Xenon.

Also, which Kelvin would give me a good mix of usable light and nice color?

You mean like take an OEM unit and fit into the headlight basket somehow? I'm not sure. I've heard of people taking the Lexus 430 HIDs (which isn't projector, I think) and using them in an H4 lens. Like the 3rd picture shows, there is a company that created a unit using Hella projectors with HID bulbs, but like I said that's $1200.

I installed a 5000k McCulloch HID kit on my Mazda5. It's almost a bit too white/blue and I wish I had gone with a 4000k or 4300k. The stock projectors have a nice cutoff so I'm not blinding other people. After driving with HID lights you'll never want to drive at night with a halogen equipped car again.

From the owner of this car: "Obviously there is still some scatter, since there are no housing for the mr2 that are actually meant for HID’s (well except for the discontinued xenarc HID kit). Anyhow, the scatter was greatly reduced with the hella e-codes that are on now, compared to the old clear ebay h4 housing that I used to have. The hella’s had a shield in there (that I did not put in), which is how, I’m guessing, the light gets its cut off. I still get flashed on a rare occasion, which at times makes me wish I had the bi-xenon kit haha!"

 

retrofit = taking the projector unit out of a headlamp (s2k, tsx, tl ) and fitting them inside the stock housing.

shine your headlights at a wall and note the cutoff. any existing glare above the cutoff will be amplified.

i'd spend the extra 12h:h: stock halogen > kit

I had both xenon 6000K head lights and xenon 6000K driving lights on the Civic. Compared to 4100K, usable light was reduced significantly. However, with both powered on, it was fine.

The cheapest/easiest solution (and glare reducing) would be to get a H4 retro kit and make sure you get the glare shields.

The best/costly solution would be to crack open your headlights, retrofit xenon projectors (Bosch, Hella) and make sure you aim them correctly before sealing them. If someone makes a cheap projector headlight for MR2's, I would get those and gut out those crap projectors with the real ones.

All OEM Xenon's use D2S or D2R bulbs which work specifically with D2 bases.
