Engineering is not an exact science, nor does it need to be. Appropriate safety factors are always used to minimize risk without designing something that becomes economically unfeasible.
:werd: Engineering is all about rounding and educated guessing.

This argument is so retarded.

Civil engineering is an engineering discipline regulated by the State, therefore it is engineering. It is also the oldest engineering discipline (some call it the second oldest profession).

7 days in a week 52 weeks in a year = 364, but a year is 365 days, and a leap year is 366 where did the extra days come from?

You do realize that the standard hand machining tolerance is 0.005"? So, 0.995" rounds to 1"? And most body tolerances on cars is +/- 0.050"?

.9999999... infinite 9's cannot be written as a fraction. This logic doesn't work because the infinite number does not exist, it can only be written out as .9 with a bar for short.

Cliffs: It's not a number.

It doesn't require anyone with a huge math background to look at the 2 numbers and see they are different. No formula is going to change that. No big long fancy explination is going to change that.

All you have to do is LOOK at the numbers. They are not the same number, they cannot be equal to each other.

So basically everything you have said is an assumption? Remember when it was blatently obvious that the world was flat? There are some things in this world that appear different than they actually are, which is why we have discussions like this.

you misunderstood. i meant to say that practices in civil cannot necessarily be applied to other forms of engineering where tolerances may be very low. but....
