i thought they removed those components to make room for the motion sensing accelerometers..

either way, i think this new motion sensing feature was rushed for E3, and my guess is the final product will have the rumble feature back in.

the vibrate motors would interfere with the motion sensors.

really? Sony really!??!? you cant fit it in cuz of the motion sensor??!?!

There's two reasons:

1) The official reason is that the gyroscopic sensors wig out with vibration, which is true.

2) Is that Sony was sued over the use of the rumble motors. The PS2 was ruled that it was not an intentional infringement, but using that tech again in the PS3 WOULD be an intentional infringement. Sony didn't want to settle with the company, so yanked the feature.

The PS3 controller has a USB port, so it's possible that they could have something like the Rez "Trance Vibrator", or there could be a wireless addon or something. I only liked vibration in a few games (Rez, Metal Gear Solid, survival horror games), so while I'm not thrilled, I'm not bummed either.

easy.. disable the rumble pack when a game uses motion sensing, and vice versa.

but yeah, now that i think more about it.. sony may be too cheap to include both.

edit: n/m, just read epoch's post... didn't know about #2.

Yup. Thats pretty much it. Or as sony says, force feedback is so last gen...

I'm sure they will find a way to put vibration in the controllers.

meh. the wii controllers have motion detection and vibration, so i don't buy that it screws the sensors up. unless sony just didn't want to put the time into perfecting the motion detection. besides, isn't that one of the points of the vibration? when you fire a gun, there should be recoil. when you run into something in GT there should be some shock.. with some actual movement in the controller, it'd be more realistic, because it actually disrupts your movement a little.

i think the patent infringement issue is the reason for not including the dual shock feature, and the motion detection reason is just an excuse.

Gyroscopic positioning != infrared triangulation. The Wii and PS3 calculate spatial movement entirely differently.

gyroscopes are not defeated by small vibrations, even if they're constant vibrations. they're used in such applications as ballistic missiles, segways, the ibot wheelchair, the big dog robot thing, and many other vibration/shock intensive applications (eg, military).

i'm aware that the wii controller uses infrared, but is that the only thing it uses? i was under the impression that it also has built in gyros, and that the infrared strip was used to calculate absolute positioning when necessary, like in an FPS.
