Default Building a computer: Advice

My parents have asked me to build a computer for their work.

They are professional photographers and this computer will be used mostly for using photoshop and handeling extremely large digital images (I'm not sure, but I think their camera is something like 20 megapixels).

Here is a list of what I am planning on ordering from newegg. Does this look like it would be good for digital photography?

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ - $460.00

ASUS A8n32-SLI Delux mobo. - $209.99
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16813131568

Lian Li PC60USB Case - $99.00

Antec TruePower 550W Power Supply - $99.99
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16817103932

eVGA Geforce 7600GT 256mb Video Card - $179.00 + $15 rebate
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16814130283

Corsair XMS DDR 400 (PC 3200) 4gb(4 x 1gb) - $376.00 + $50 x 2 rebate
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820145575

NEC 16x 3550a DVD burner - $35.99
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16827152060

Linksys PCI Wireless Adapter 802.11b/g - $49.99 + $10 rebate

I still need to add a hard drive. Any advice? Are the Raptors good? 3gb/s SATA? They already have some large external firewire drives for storing images. This will mostly be to just run programs off of.

I am particularly unsure on the Video Card. Is the 7600GT an overkill since they won't be gaming? It needs to handle large digital images very well.

They will be switching from Macs to a PC because their lab is all PC based.

My parents already have a monitor/keyboard/mouse.

I'm not a photoshopper but it looks like your on the right track. I'm not sure about the video card but I think faster is better on photoshop. The raptors are pretty good but make sure you have cooling as they tend to run hot. I do remember reading somewhere that the 16meg cache maxtor out performed the raptor, but I can't verify that. You may want to look into it. I also reccomend running mirrored raid since it's a business pc.

20? Really? Lets see it.

Raptors are awesome. Fastest non SCSI drive you can get.

edit: I'd switch from Asus to the Abit AN8 Ultra. I'm partial to Abit and there's no need for SLI on that system. The rest of that system is bangin` though. I'd rock it.

I have the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ and the ASUS A8n32-SLI Delux mobo in the computer that I built last summer. Great PC, I love it. :goodjob: I have a Lian Li case too, it's not the same one you picked out tho.

Anyway, I have a 74gb raptor hard drive from my OS and it runs great. A little noisy but the speed makes up for it. I also have a 500gb 3.0gb/s hard drive for storage and even tho it is huge it is also pretty quick.

Hope this helps

I'm not sure exactly how may megapixels their camera has. I will ask them next time I talk to them. The files they deal with are hugenormous though, especially when they are dealing with raw format.

I will look into Abit. Also, what is SLI? Is that running 2 video cards at once?

Thanks man! The Lian Li case I picked is actually the one I run on my computer. I really like it. It's not all riced out, it is well made, seems to keeps the system pretty cool with the 4 fans.

Well the Abit one I suggested will do the same for less money. I only ever had a problem with one abit board and that was my VP6, they replaced it for $20 no hassle. Just my personal preference really, Asus, Tyan, Gigabyte are all good.

SLI is for running 2 video cards, really only benefit for that is 3d gaming. It'll offer them no benefit and just create a more expensive motherboard.
