You're looking at it from a fundamental standpoint. I'm looking at it from an artistic creativity/talent standpoint.

Bass takes no talent.

what an odd comment to make. arguing about musical preference is as dumb as it sounds, so I won't comment further then to say:

if you guys dissing the bassist have really never heard a interesting bass line and not just flamebaiting, then you may want to check out:

* P-Nut from 311
* Ray Campi, rockabilly
* Ron Carter
* Stanley Clarke
* Les Claypool, rock
* John Clayton, Jr.
* Charles Mingus
* John Paul Jones(Led Zeppelin)
* Trevor Dunn
* Mike Lee
* Marshall Lytle, rock and roll
* Jaco Pastorius
* Scott Owen, punkabilly
* Walter Page
* John Patitucci
* Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen
* Al Rex
* Lee Rocker, rockabilly
* Jasper Somsen
* Sebastian Steinberg, double bassist with Soul Coughing
* Sting, rock
* Jonathan Sullivan
* Tony Levin (peter gabriel, many many others)
*Jack Casady (Hot tuna, jefferson airplane)
*Duck Dunn (blues bros, booker t and the mgs, stax records session man)
* Geddy Lee
* Geezer Butler

i'd like to add cliff burton (metallica) and jack bruce (cream), both of whom played excellent bass solos. geezer butler is crazy good at bass, even at 57.

no, the bass is an instrument meant to make music with. maybe the bands you listen to use simple, plain bass parts, and that's fine. but it doesn't apply to everything. as kill_kill_kill pointed out, there are dozens (if not hundreds or thousands) of incredibly talented bass players who are extremely musically creative and imaginative, and play killer solos. but i wouldn't expect someone as narrow minded as you to be aware of that.
