why don't they just remove all humans instead? :hsugh:

It's actually a lot easier to understand as soon as you drop the whole religious references and begin thinking of it as just another computer and how a computer functions. Once you do that the whole thing just pops open like a book.

It's a symbiotic relationship of sorts.

They need the humans to create power for the machines (batteries..explained in the first one).

The humans need a will to live and survive in order to provide that power and humans thrive on conflict. This is why he was offered to take 21 people back to the city and they would survive while the others would be eliminated. even within the Matrix the "humans" needed a disruption of sorts. remember he explains that they made a perfect world (eden) and they lost entire crops of humans because they needed dissent and a certain amount of rebellion to have a reason to continue and survive.

there is more to it than that but this is the basic line of reasoning for keeping the humans both in and out of the Matrix itself.

I'll check this thread a bit later I gotta get back to garage cleaning...but i love discussing this series...it's kind of like the Donnie Darko debates because there are literally thousands of ways to read it.

i always imagined smith to be a virus and neo to be the anti virus
the previous smith/viruses forced the system to reboot/reformat until neo came along and fixed the problem without having to start over

I have watched these movies so many times it isn't even funny h:
It was the trace program. His call begins to be traced and he stops the trace as he's talking. I doubt he was calling anyone in particular, but rather, simply talking to the mechanism that was recording the call knowing it would get where he wanted it to. That's my guess.

in the humans eyes I guess that is true, but for the series and after reading this thread it makes sense that it is the other way

how did the agents cause system reboots? Weren't they created by the machines?

Oh and I just remembered the last phone call Neo had in the first one. Don't they hack into the matrix using phones? I figure he just hacked in then flew away

you know how people post a computer problem question and you always see someone suggest "reformat"?
