XP on MacTel is official: narf gets paid
It's over, done with, and the check is in the mail- literally. Colin Nederkoorn has just verified the solution that the now-famous narf and fellow programmer blanka came up with for dual-booting Windows XP and OS X on an Intel-powered Mac, and announced that all future donations to the project will be go towards the open-source work that will evolve from the contest. MacRumors is reporting that the winning methodology will be posted online shortly, and will supposedly work on the 17- and 20-inch iMacs, MacBook Pro, and new Mac Mini. Chalk up another victory for the invisible hand of capitalism -- it's amazing how fast $13,000 can get folks to code.

Ok I'll bite. I like macs but I keep going back to windows machines because they're cheaper for equivalent hardware. My first thought was, "why would you take a more-expensive mac and get rid of the one thing that makes it unique compared to a windows box?" Then I realized however, that this is in addition to the mac os. As for what exactly the point is, I still dunno.

h:Well, you also have a better looking, well polished device with US based tech support and a warranty service that includes overnight shipping.
Also, now you can have one machine that handles currently both of the major OSs out there, and soon possibly Linux too. And, eventually, run mutliple OSs side-by-side?

Ya don't need to try and sell a mac to me.
I guess if you get your rocks off on computers for their own sake rather than the stuff you actually accomplish with them, um, ok, then this could be potentially interesting or something.
I do the same damn shit on both mac and windows boxes, it don't matter which OS it is. So for people like me, what the hell does it matter if I'm "covering major OSes?"

But, to someone like me, it means that I can run my preferred OS and hardware, and if need be, switch to WinXP to use some random program that there's no mac equivilent. In my daily work, I can get more work done quicker on a Mac, but I'm forced to use a PC because of certain key applications. With this, I could minimize desk space and minimize time trying to work on two systems at once.
Though, I'm more likely at this point to buy a beater truck/SUV before I buy a MacTel laptop, but the fact I can use this to minimize the amount of hardware I need to use makes this development very interesting.
