This same friend had a cousin of his bring him some boxes from Las Vegas and I think they ran him $5 a box. Maybe the price here in cali is the reason he doesn't buy them :dunno:

AK-47, AKM, and varients thereof: 7,62x39mm
AK-74 and varients: 5,45x39.5mm (streched and necked down 7,62x39mm)
a few Bulgarian, Russian, and Chinese varients are chambered in 5.56x45mm (.223)
There are less then a dozen factory 5.56x45mm SKS rifles known to exist. They were prototypes for American export, made by the Chinese.
Anyway, the last time I bought and assembled an AR receiver, it was an Eagle Arms unit. It was well finished and wonderfully machined, but they haven't been readily availible for cheap in a few years now.
