I thought the cam is whats important in engine break in, and not pistons.

piston rings are important as well. but that link is for motorcycles i believe, which doesn't necessarily translate to car engines. not many car engines rev past 13000rpm.

People don't like/ don't know how to rev up their engine all the way and use engine braking.
