plug crossover cable into nic of both computers.
after that, wait a couple min. go grab a drink or something
then on laptop, go to start > run, type cmd and click OK
at command prompt type ipconfig and hit enter
make note of IP Address (ex: 169.15.1.15)
on computer, go to start > run
type \\IP address of laptop\c$ (ex: \\169.15.1.15\c$) and click OK
you should then be able to browse thru your laptop's files. ...assuming everything is on the C:\ of your laptop.

Once you hook them up with a crossover cable, I think that all you do is setup a network, like said before, by going to Start>Control Panel>Network Connections. If you look on the left, you will see an icon that says Setup a Home Network, or something like that. Just follow the wizard from their. Now, this is all from XP, so it may be different for you depending on what OS you have.
Another easy way to transfer the stuff is to just burn it. A plus for doing this is that you have some of your files backed up on CD. Good luck!

connect both computers with crossover cable.
wait a few minutes
start > run, type cmd, click OK
type ipconfig and hit enter on both
note down the Ip addresses...they should be 169.254.xxx.yyy
now do what joebenz said...
start > run
type cmd, click OK
type ping 169.254.xxx.yyy and hit enter and see what happens and post back here
