they're probably not all the same, but all the big-name ones should be just fine. I use mobil1 in the shitbrick. If you really want the *best* look into something like royal purple, but be prepared to pay a lot more than you should for oil.

Noob alert

They are mostly all the same especially if it's your daily driver. If you are drag racing or actual track days then Amsoil or Royal Purple is your friend

The difference is in the additives. Mobil one was one of the first and has been tested since 1965. Why take a chance? It is the only one to use. I have also read that if you install only one quart synthetic and the rest a good grade of conventional oil it will protect to 99% of a full synthetic oil change. That is what I do for my cars.

I used Mobil 1 and swore by it, but after I got the E36, M1s weren't the best for it (I used 0w-40 during the winter) so I switched to Castrol Syntec (OEM Synthetic Oil for BMWs) 10w-40 in the summer. The car seem to run smoother with Castrol so I'm sticking with those. Currently I'm running Syntec 5w-30 for the winter (7 quarts!).

I'll never use Mobil 1 for tranny or diff fluid. Their protection blows, so I'm gonna try Red Line.

Mobil 1 5W-30 full synthetic in my GTI. Last time around I used Mobil 1 Extended Performance (15,000 mile synthetic) because I put a rediculous amount of miles in my car (150+ per day), and changed the oil at around 13,000 miles (a little under 3 months), and the oil came back from Blackstone Labs telling me that I could actually go longer without changing my oil. This time I went with regular 5W-30 synthetic because I commute to work in a vanpool (over $600/mo savings in gas), so I will probably change next for time, not miles.

Unless the manufacturer recommends synthetic, you don't need it.
