Of course, after I made those plans I remembered there's this place Ella's Deli here that isn't quite what I would call a traditional kosher deli. It has a merrygoround out front and the whole place is like a circus theme. I thought it looked stupid so I never went. But I did a little looking around online and it turns out the place is a full kosher style deli with a 20-page deli menu and 10-page dessert menu.
Either way, I don't mind that I'm goin to Chicago, it's always good to see family and I'm sure my grandma will appreciate me going to the cemetery with her.

Well, off to Chicago I go. I'm going to miss football today but that's okay, it's goin to see family instead. I'll take pictures and with any luck I'll get grandma to get some kind of ridiculously large sandwich that will make for a funny picture. We shall see.
When I was in Podiatry school, I had this one patient, sweet old guy, owned a kosher deli down by Neiman Marcus in SF. Every time he came in, he and his wife had this big platter of Jewish Soul Food, soup, stuffed bell peppers, various spiced meat sandwiches, the best Lox I have ever had. They got me a box of truffles shaped like little graduation hats when I got my degree. I gained a new appreciation for a lot of ethnic foods when I lived in San Francisco
BTW, that sandwich looks familiar, ton of meat, and some killer rye bread

Yes, I have achieved deli!
I had lots and lots of pickles and challah, a bowl of matzah ball soup, and a pastrami and corned beef sandwich. It was great. I took a really crappy picture.

I will say this, it wasn't quite like the deli back home in DC, but I'm thinkin that since New York is the center of the kosher deli universe, and I guess DC/Baltimore, Philly, and maybe Boston (I dunno, I have family there but I have yet to inquire about the quality of their delis) might have the other quality delis, and then apparently like Miami where all the old jewish people go to retire also has good delis.
But so far, all I know is DC > Chicago when it comes to deli, at least in my limited experience with Chicago deli. Perhaps I will find a better place in Chicago, but this Ella's Deli place here in Madison is actually looking kinda promising so I'm gonna check it out.

Well to tell ya the truth, the only way a deli can qualify as a REAL deli is one where right when you sit down they bring out a big metal bowl of all kinds of different whole pickles, and a pickled green tomato or two. If they don't have that then right off the bat you know it's not totally authentic. The place I went to tonight had pickle slices, and they were of a sort of deli pickle flavor, but nothing like what they have at the place near my folks' house. I see a sliced pickle on this Lester's Deli page so there we go, same deal.
They do that in NYC, and they do it in DC. I dunno about Boston, Philly or Baltimore. I'm sure other places in other parts of the world might have it too. But it ain't a real kosher deli if they don't have the pickles like that. Nuff said.
