The basics include working for a print magazine rather than a daily newspaper. Since the beginning, I've been the kind of writer that spends more time in development and research, going deeper than the hard-and-fast "breaking news" reporting.
I'd like to stay as far away from politics as possible. Reporting on the partisan shit-flinging makes me feel like a stenographer ... or worse yet a gossip-monger. :ugh:
Other than that, I'm open to pretty much any genre of writing where I'm able to make a meaningful contribution.

I've contributed to MacDirectory on occasion. I wrote for the Echo Times - a financially independent paper staffed at College Of Marin - for the last year. We went to print every third week; I wrote an Op-Ed collumn and features for Arts & Entertainment, National Politics, Cultural Dialogue. I dabbled in the JC Sports scene as well.
Now, I'm doing odd jobs (proofing, PR blurbs) as I can find them down here in LA. But the last gasp of General Ed classes are taxing.
h:Next semester, I'll be writing for CSUN's monthly Sundial magazine as part of the study for my major. From there, I'll go into internships for the bulk of my senior year.
So, it's an evolutionary process..and I'm nearly there. It's nice to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
