I agree with the handling aspect, but then again, I think you forget no one makes a car that handles like a BMW.
I tend to look at everything else, though.... the whole package. And I think the IS looks absolutely beautiful (better than the new BMWs), they are meticulously assembled (the way the doors close is soooooo seductively soft), it easy to opperate (why does BMW require you to insert the stupid key fob for their version of "keyless ignition" when Lexus really has a keyless ignition?), and of course, Lexus has by far the best reliability, customer service, and dealer support in the industry (my Lexus dealer offers free inside and out car washes for FREE by HAND every Saturday, they offer free loaners for everything you might need, even an oil change, and they will pick you and/or the car up from your home or office - all at no extra charge, and they will do this for as long as you own the car, even out of warranty).
I would like a BMW, sure.... but I'm not prepared for $60.00 oil changes, $20.00 wiper blades, and every warning light to start to go hay wire 3 days after I buy the car (read this month's issue of Car and Driver). With a Lexus, you can still actually work on the car yourself, and it uses regular oil (not the full synthetic the BMWs require).
Big
Money
Waste
Oh, BTW..... Lexus has the highest resale value in the industry as well. BMW? One of the LOWEST (they depreciate like crazy)

Also BMW has some of the best residual values around. Lexus and BMW are both good.
Not counting exotics, and in no particular order, the best cars for resale value are Honda/Acura, Toyota/Lexus, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. Brand-wide they're all around 55% residual value after three years which is about as good as it gets, obviously with some variation depending on model. Certain Porsche models do significantly better than that.
