Default ipod/pc help

I just bought a 3rd gen ipod from my friend for reletively cheap. I got some stuff for it today and when i plug it in my usb it says "USB device not recognized" so itunes wouldn't detect it. It's most likely a usb issue becasue the ipod works fine and i had it charging/playing in my car without any problems. I just can't connect it to my computer to get his shitty music off and my good music on. I dunno what to do.

EDIT: I checked the device manager, all usb ports are working properly, or so it says.

I don't know if the ipod is formatted for mac. The cable is new so i doubt its that. Do you need to be able to connect it to reformat or can you do it through the ipod itself. Also is the ipod supposed to charge through the usb, if it is than mine doesn't.

3rd gen ipods don't charge through usb.

Does it just show up as a hard drive, or does it not show up at all? Might want to try another usb slot if you have one.

Ok i think i figured it out. It was formatted for mac, it ended up letting me reformat for windows then the battery died so it wouldn't do anything execpt "usb device not recognized". The only charger i have is one for my cigarette lighter in my car, so i sat there to let it charge for a while, and now i connect it and it detected it in itunes . So do they make a charger that plugs into the wall since mine doesn't charge through usb, i didn't see those at the store today so i dunno.

Edit: One more thing

I have the wire that has both usb and firewire, will the ipod charge through the firewire if i hook that up, (3rd gen ipod) The reason i ask this question without simply trying it myself is because i have a firewire card that is not installed so i was seeing if anyone knew without me having to get off my lazy ass to install it just to see if it would charge, also i read dont connect both the usb and the firewire to the computer at the same time, is that true?
