I thought the Task Manager shows VIRTUAL memory that is reserved by the program. The bigger question is how often does it access that memory.

Notice that Firefox has a HUGE chunk of memory too. These programs need it due to the enormous buffers they have to keep, but you're not always using the whole buffer.

So, this is no indicator of the crappyness of a program.

BTW, when will iTunes 5.0 come out for XP?

nope. it includes physical memory usage.

memory usage is not a measure of the "crappiness" of any program to begin with. some programs just need a lot. take photoshop, for instance.. but programs can be built to still run smoothly even if they use up that much memory - like photoshop, for instance.

but i am curious as to what itunes is doing with all that memory, when it hasn't even gotten past the end user license agreement?

 Must only be you. Itunes 4 takes up 30MB+ of memory.

i see you didn't bother to click on the links i posted earlier. you probably should do that, too. even on OSX, itunes takes up quite a bit of memory.

this is a fresh install of itunes 4.9.0.17 on my home computer:

cpu usage jumps to 90+ percent whenever a new song starts playing in itunes. :eh:
