I was cruising through some TF sites that I used to visit and remembered this:
http://www.bigbot.com/transformers-reissues/

for those who want a list of new and reissue stuff that came out.

Transformers Commemorative Series V
All prices are for MISB (mint in sealed box)

Open the floodgates, here comes Hasbro's new cash cow ...

Inferno - $7 - retailed @ $29.99
This figure can still be found at some TRU's for 50% off the green tagged price. There's nothing wrong with Inferno, but you should pay too much for him ... he was clearanced out for under $5.

Hoist - $10 range - retailed @ $29.99
This is the 3rd time in a row. First Silverstreak, then Red Alert, now Hoist? Hoist is a repaint of Trailbreaker. Why they couldn't re-issue him first, I have NO idea. Because of his G1 unpopularity, Hoist was a poor seller.

Tracks - $10 range - reatailed @ $29.99
Tracks is a great figure, but he was one of the last ones seen on the shelves. You shouldn't have to pay too much for this figure considering his last sale price was around $8.

- Hasbro is reissuing these too quickly. Series III, IV, and V were all done within 3 months. Nobody is collecting these because they're too expensive.
- Shelves are packed with TF's the collector didn't want. Gone are Prowl and Jazz, the popular G1 figures.

Transformers Commemorative Series VI
All prices are for MISB (mint in sealed box)

Series VI appeared rather quickly. Since III, IV, and V were on the shelves, this just added to the pile. Hasbro decided to release 2 figures to ease the shelf pain ... unfortunately, they were repaints of toys that weren't selling. The feeling of a "limited edition" is completely gone.

Grapple - $7 - retailed @ $29.99
This figure can still be found at some TRU's for 50% off the green tagged price. There's nothing wrong with Grapple, but you should pay too much for him ... he was clearanced out for under $5.

Grapple is not a junk toy at all. He's just on the shelf next to an identical Inferno.

Smokescreen - $10 range - retailed @ $29.99
3 for 3. Another Prowl repaint. This guy clogged the shelves too.

Once again, Smokescreen isn't a crap toy. He's on the shelf with the popular Prowl and nearly identical Silverstreak.

By now, true collectors migrated to the Takara reissues. They were getting all the cool toys (Optimus Prime, Megatron, Starscream, Soundwave, Sideswipe) and we got reissued repaints.

Transformers Commemorative Series VII
All prices are for MISB (mint in sealed box)

Series VII was a nice change of pace. Finally, really good reissues were on the way. Unfortunately, there were 10 different prices for a all the reissues. There was no definate price, it kept shifting from week to week depending on TRU sales figures. ($15.98 to $29.99) On top of this mess, each store had a different tag.

Rodimus Prime - $20 - retailed @ 29.99
Now Rodimus was released for $29.99 ... but he's bigger than everyone else. This really devaluded the other reissues. Rodimus made series III, IV, V, and VI figures look heavily over priced.

Rodimus sold fairly well because Takara hasn't reissued this guy yet, in their book format that is.

Then again, Amazon.com/TRU.com did their best to screw this up.

Dirge - $15-ish - retailed @ 29.99
Hopefully Ramjet and Thrust follow soon after. Having all 3 coneheads would be sweet.

Series VII really got the reissues back on track. These were figures not seen in the Takara lineup and started the reissue price drop. Hasbro and TRU realized they screwed this up pretty badly and started to rethink the reissues.

Unfortunately, reissued TF's were bombing in sales. These guys didn't move off the shelves because you'd see 15+ of each figure sitting there ... collecting dust. Now that TRU put them on sale, people would wait until they hit rock bottom prices before buying.

Transformers Commemorative Series VIII
All prices are for MISB (mint in sealed box)

Series VIII

Skids - $20 - retailed @ $24.99
Skids was a little too late. He hit the shelves and nobody wanted to pay $24.99 for him. All the other reissues were @ $12 to $19. The entire collecting community waited for him to price drop.

Because of this, every store got 1 shipment of Skids, and that was it. He's a bit more difficult to find.

Sideswipe ...

NEVER RELEASED. See him in Skids' inner cover? He was right there ... the G1 figure everybody wanted to buy ... but he was NEVER F'ING RELEASED. Canada got him, that was about it. If you see Sideswipe, you're paying $40 + shipping from China on eBay.

This pretty much signaled the end of the reissues. They failed because of:
- poor release planning (reissuing repaints first, reissuing repaints of repaints in back to back series)
- horrible pricing (a new series would hit the shelf, the previous would be on clearance)
