story time ...

My brother hooks up with a private seller who has AFA graded items. He already purchased an AFA'ed reissue Starscream from him, and now the seller offered a Predaking ... AFA85, for $175 shipped. He figures, what the hell ... AFA85 is HIGH.

from the AFA website
"The Silver level consists of the grades 85, 80, and 75. The figures that receive these grades are in excellent condition. A figure graded an 85 will often be referred to as 'case fresh' and should be very close to gold level condition. The term 'case fresh' is certainly justifiable as the average figure pulled from a sealed case will grade an 85 due to small flaws which occur when the figures are packaged or shipped in the case."

This is what he got in the mail ...

this is pretty bad.

I have NO idea what to say about that Predaking. The AFA case is completely sealed with no signs of any sort of tampering.

theory 1:
this is truly an AFA-85 ... by admitting so, AFA standards are extremely pathetic and they're a hackjob company.

theory 2:
the seller someone opened the AFA case and swapped toys. (if you search the serial number on the AFA label, you'll see that a predaking was actually graded)

theory 3:
this is an AFA-85 ... only because it was an inside favor done at AFA. (someone who knew someone who had a buddy who did a favor, etc ...)

when thinking about it ... who the hell would actually send this crap in for grading? I know AFA has a grade of toy deemed "U" for "uncirculated". You have to send AFA the complete case of toys, sealed, and they'll give it the "U" rating on top of it. (aka AFA-85U)

But ... this doesn't have the "U"

Did your brother see pictures of the actual item before he paid for it, which could prove that something was switched?

Sadly, I have realized I have nothing to go out searching for during my lunch break today. :happysad:

see, that's the thing ... he didn't.

I know when I make 95% of my online purchases though private sellers, I think I put a bit of too much trust into them. I've never asked for a picture from

J.Mok
- TFC Soundwave
- TFC Megatron
- TFC Starscream
- TFC Sideswipe

The other dude
- Reissue Predaking
- TFC Perceptor
- TFC Blitzwing
- TFC Tracks
- eHobby Starscream (clear)
- eHobby Starscream (black)

I guess this is a lesson learned to me to ask for pictures at all times. I guess I've just been lucky not to have this happen to me.

But ... if someone offers an AFA-85, you've done business with them before ... would you even think something like this would happen?

True, I probably would just do the "OMG BUY BUY BUY" routine and not think anything like that would happen.
