Since when is a Miata an S2k competitor? Miata price range is $21-26k. S2k is $33k.

I still feel the Miata represents one of the best values you can get today. I can't speak for the Sky/Solstice yet but it's one of the cheapest yet most thoroughly engineered RWD cars you can get today.
That said, I wish they'd come out with a four passenger RWD car with close to a 50/50 weight distribution for under $20k but that's highly unlikely and a topic for another thread.
