Right now I'm on my girlfriend's slow-ass computer because something is up with my laptop. The past 2 days or so the computer has been really slow to load all my programs and stuff once it gets into windows. Like I mean, it takes 5-10 minutes because it loads stuff and then freezes up for a second and back and forth. Anyway, about 2 hours ago, I installed some windows updates and when I rebooted I heard this weird internal clicking in my computer and now it won't even boot into windows! It says "1782 - Disk Controller Failure" on the Compaq boot screen and then it goes into a black screen that says "Non-System disk or disk error. replace and strike any key when ready". I tried booting with the XP disc but it said it couldnt perform the setup because of a disk error. I called the IT people on campus and they said it sounds like a piece of my hardware could be damaged. What is up?

Is there anyway to retrieve any of my files? Also, how much might a new hard drive for my laptop run me (just a ballpark)?

Sure, if you want to pay a good deal of money for a skilled technician to try and do data recovery. For a new laptop hd, I'm gonna guess ~ $150 or so. I've never had to replace the hd on a laptop though, so don't exactly hold me to that.

What's a good company for notebook hard drives or a good place to get a new hd at? Also, could there be any other problem besides the hard drive?
