Yes. It probably is detonation, since it happens when you let off the gas.

What octane fuel did you put in it?
Try running 93 and see if it helps.

A stock D16Z6 should not be detonating. Are you using the same tranny, or one that came with the engine? What if you rev the engine in neutral do you still here it?
