Anyone have a kitten/cat?

Put the cat in that room for the first say, week that you have it. Put food, water, litterbox, something to scratch (those corrugated cardboard scratch pads work great, optionally lined with catnip), and something for it to rest on (they make these things called "purr pads" that cats love). Those are all the basic functions cats do throughout their day. Also go in the room plenty of times to go play with it.
When you get ready to let it out, put one or two examples of each thing in assorted spots of the house. Once you let it out of the room it'll go looking around the house when it wants to eat, drink, poop, scratch or nap, and it'll find the stuff familiar to it from the little room. That's what my parents did when they got their latest cat and it's amazingly well behaved. They keep a second litterbox on their screened-in porch and the cat will actually ask in its own little cat way to be let out on the porch to poop and only uses the inside litterbox when nobody's home to let her onto the porch. How nice of her to try and not stink up the house.
