95 was the first year for the E36 M3 in the US and the only year with the 3.0L engine 96-99 had the 3.2L engine.

but the 3.0L has better intake so it gains more hp with the correct modifications.
common upgrade for the 3.2L engine is 3.0L intake with euro 3" or 3.5" HFM from the 540i and of course software.
