Your privacy in a vehicle is protected only insofar as something you might be carrying in a locked storage compartment (glove box, trunk, or in some cases armrest). If the storage compartment is locked and a police officer wants to open it they are only legally allowed to do so with a warrant. Now if the only way to access your engine requires you to open a locked storage compartment like on certain mid-engined cars, then the cops would need to get a warrant to look at your trunk to look at your engine. But otherwise you've pretty much gotta let them see.

:werd: right to privacy is has been ruled many times to not fully apply to cars because you can't expect privacy in cars. Even if you refused a car search, the police can impound your car on the slightest probable cause, and then find plenty of stuff to get you on. With that said, though, your denial of a search can't be used as evidence of guilt, so often time, especially in cases of a residence, your best interest is to deny them the search.

You think thats bad. My 2 friends were driving home on friday night, one was drunk, and the driver was fine. They get pulled over, the passenger gets asked to step out of the car, gets asked a few questions, he's nice, everything is cool, and then he gets arrested for drunk in public, AFTER the cop TOLD him to get out of the car!

Entrapment anybody!

10 hours in a drunk tank, $25 fine and not on his record, so the prick isnt gonna fight it. He wasnt even drunk! he'd been drinking, but he wasnt drunk. And he never got a subriety test!

large crack in window
I had no stickers or paper to prove that they are legal (intake, header, exhaust, MSD ingition)
loud exhaust
insurance card was expired by 8 days

All your fault. He's just doing his job. Maybe you did get profiled, boohoo. If you're in a mod-unfriendly state, keep paperwork with you.

Most of it is fix-it tickets, so I wouldn't worry too much.

the police can't impound your ride for "probable cause". if that happened, that woul be grounds for a lawsuit. you need to take a look at your 4th amendment right. the right against illegal search and seizure. now, if you are pulled over for a felony stop, like dui, going 150, something like that, then they can search whatever, whenever they want. you do have the right to refuse anything and your ride won't be impounded unless it's a dui stop. that's about the only stipulation.

Your fourth amendment rights do not fully apply to cars. Why? Because a car is not a private place, it's one that's used on public roads in full view of everyone else. As a result, your right to illegal search and seizure only applies to your trunk and your glove box. Sure, you can refuse to pop your hood or your trunk, and refuse to get out of the car. But, if they find any reason that your car is not legal, like, say, an illegal exhaust, they can impound your vehicle. And this is perfectly legal.
