i don't buy into it at all. those cars always have massive recalls from year to year.

yeh, but i've been told that the trannys on the STi (i know this is only a small slice of subaru, but a pretty notcible addition the last few years) is nearly bulletproof.... which in my book counts as probably the highest ranked component to look at for a cars reliabilaity

My buddy has already changed the rear diff on his STi 3 times (all under warranty). The dealer keeps telling him not to use the centre diff control, but then why do they put it there? My old boss' legacy blew the rear diff and it caught on fire. I know these are isolated incidents but from what I've heard Scooby diffs are weak and like to break.

This still doesn't stop me from wanting to own one though.

werd, he is driving it to hard, something is telling me that he likes to put it 65% rear all the time... tell him to leave it in auto mode until he needs it a certain way.

nope subaru trannys are weak. it's not just isolated to the STi either. wrx had this problem from it's first year and yes I'm talking about stock unmodified cars.

the problems are PER 100. That means, you get a percentage of problems. I remember Acura had a problem with 1% of their auto trannies going to crap for no reason. They didn't servey 100 people, that would be such a small scope. Subaru is definately not the highest quality auto maker. I've noticed this: VW people think VW has the highest quality, Honda people think Honda has the highest quality, etc. I go by stats that show Hondas are high quality vehicles. I can see a ford product straight from the factory that has panels that don't line up. It's terrible.
