and the Jetta GLI first year for the Mark IV which was the 1.8T engine.

I don't think I could pay that much money for a car with a twist beam rear suspension.

The MkV Golf seems reasonably encouraging, but the MkV Jetta looks booooring. Now if only VW brought the 5-door GTI over here then maybe I'd be interested.

you've said this many many a times but that doesn't detract from the performance of the car much so it's really a non-issue for 99% of the driving population.

My friend has an 02 Passat, it seems all right. No major repairs as of yet, but some of the minor service items (like the climate control lighting) is not designed for user serviceability, but costs a buttload if you go to the dealer. I personally don't like how the cockpit is laid out, but that's just me.
