i would just set up an ftp server (there's free and "free" software out there to do it) and then either use a forwarding service (like dyndns) or a static ip address, or email for the ip address each time. way easier than a vpn.

You still have to setup the server on the other computer...If you are just doing 2 computers maybe an SSH secure shell would be a better idea. You can get free ones off the internet. It takes a little getting used to moving around but is simple kinda like dos was. That way you can download files and upload them as you need to plus it is secure. Ftp would be the next alternative and might be easier to use. What exactly is it going to be used for. Buisness? Aslo, is it for general files or time sensitive date? Good luck!
Must realize, people that will be operating the computers aren't exactly computer savvy. So that wouldn't work either.
