the particular model i saw requires no cable. it uses existing usb thumb drives to store the songs, so you can buy multiple thumb drives and upgrade if you wanted to. I'm not 100% sure but it probably uses rechargeable battery since it was too small to hold even an AAA battery.

Yeah I think that's a bit of an exagerration. But you can get a Creative Nomad Muvo TX 512 MB for $125 or less, and it comes with a screen too.
