Default for those of you with bmws...

have you ever had your gauges go haywire on you and started flactuating. I am talking about tach, fuel, speedometer gauges...

or maybe heard anyone doing that. If so, what did you do to correct it?

yes all gauges move at once and then go down to 0 and then come back to normal. I did some research and seems like its common problem in bmws...

the old ones seem to have had a problem with that. i remember back when i was in elementary school, my mom had a 1987 528i and before we got rid of it, the rpm needle was hardly ever stable.

then last year, when i borrowed my roommates beater car, 1986 528e, the rpm needle would go nuts, speedo/fuel/temp would drop to zero.... then i would smack the top of the dash and it would be normal again.....for like 5min :exnbp:

no clue what caused it.

my friend's ex gf had a 89 328is and her gauges were just the same. they went nuts, and when we smack the dashboard, it'd be ok again for a lil bit h:

in the E30 you need to change the Batt in the cluster... when they went bad the gages would stop working completely

I used to be a service advisor at a BMW dealership and I never saw anything like that on an E46 3-series, or the E36 for that matter.

If the problem is temporarily fixed by smacking the dash, it sounds like a loose wire somewhere.
