Hardware dudes....need your assistance
I need to get a new HD for my Dell Dimension 8250....don't ask why I have that PC.....
Anyway, this is what I gathered so far if I want to go SATA
SATA HD
Power adapter?? not sure...
SATA controller
I currently have a 7200 RPM IDE HD.....
Sorry if I sound like a n00b....I've been in desktop setup for so long that I've neglected to keep up with hardware/specs and requirements.

there's not a huge diffrence in speed. it's minimal.
Unless your motherboard already has SATA ports, yes you will need a SATA Controller card.
Unless your power supply has SATA power connectors OR the hard drive you get has standard power connectors, yes, you will need a power adapter (they are cheap though)

How much is a typical SATA card and power adapter cost? I am looking at www.newegg.com right now as we speak.

when I got mine, power adapter was less than $5 I think.
SATA was still pretty new... the 2 channel controller card I got was like $50-60. they are lots cheaper now. Probably about half that cost.

Anyone notice a big difference? Or is it so minimal that I should stick with the IDE interface?

I have a raptor 36gb drive. It's great.
I went from running a 2 drive RAID 0 to the single raptor drive. I didn't notice a speed diffrence. It's a very fast drive.
Right now, the biggest (and one of the only) advantages that SATA has is the smaller data cable. Speed and reliaability are almost exactly the same. The speed of drives isn't even maxing out ATA/100, so having SATA/150 is pretty useless as far as speed goes. Its like having tires that can go 400mph but on a car that can't even top out at 100mph, but they LOOK nice.

unless you want to run multiple IDE drives. then you have an advantage with SATA.
