you know the maxtor 7200rpm drives with 16MB of cache were faster than the raptors.

raptors are too expensive for the money IMO.

but yes, either a hdd cooler or a dedicated hdd fan is a very good idea. that goes for any drive that spin at 7200rpm or higher.

I would never run my 15K rpm drives if the hdd fans ever crapped out.

I'm running 2 of the 32Gigs in a RAID 0 with no extra special cooling? I have them mounted low in the chassis and the front 2 intake fans blow over them (and the 160Gig storage 7200 drive) and I've had 0 heat problems. It's a coolermaster case with a total of 4 80mm fans (2 front intake, one rear exhaust, one top blowhole) plus the PS fan. I'm happy with mine, I just wish the 74Gig's were out when I got mine. Ever since I discovered bittorrent, I've had to watch what I keep.

Raptors have been out for a couple of years now, there's probably something newer and better coming down the pipe, but $152 is pretty good price.

I have a 36gb raptor. It's sitting near the top of my case... I can lay my hand on top of it and it's barely warm. Maybe I just have good air flow by it, but it doesn't get hot at all.

Now my 2 7200rpm drives in a RAID 0 get pretty damn warm, not hot though.

from what i read theres noise issues that either have to do with the hdd being too hot or while it's reading

Nothing unusual coming from mine? The fans overpower the HD sounds anyway and my fans aren't even really that loud.

if that's all you're doing you don't even need something like the raptor

but if you do buy them don't worry too much about the heat.

Which Maxtor 7200rpm is faster than the raptor, the 36 or the 74gig....
