Default Lupus

So I was working tonight and I had to ask my boss a question about a routing number on a check, as I walked into her office my friend was sitting there talking to her. My friend continued to ask me how my thanksgiving was and I said it was ok. Then I asked her how hers was and she said it was bad.
The reason being is she told me she went to the doctors yesterday and found out she had Lupus. On top of that she's Anemic (sp). I don't get it, why does everything have to happen to this poor girl. I feel so bad for her, she's one of my really good friends. I wish there was something I could do for her. I wish shit like this would stop happening to her, she deserves better. I'm tired of cancer, my prom date passed away from Leukimia (sp). I'm really depressed, I just want the best for her, I've done some research on Lupus which I'm going to share with her this weekend, she needs to do some research so she knows what's going on with her body. It's not fair, I feel so bad for her, I really don't want anything to happen to her because I care for her so much :wtc:. Please keep my friend Nina in your prayers and hope she gets better. I love her as a friend and more she means a lot to me.

LUPUS: Lupus is a chronic (long-lasting) autoimmune disease where the immune system, for unknown reasons, becomes hyperactive & attacks normal tissue. This attack results in inflammation & brings about symptoms.

My best friend has Lupus. She was diagnosed with it her Sophomore year of High school. Her junior and senior year she had to wear a wig because of losing her hair to the chemo. She's been on and off prednisone more times than i can count. She can't have kids. She can't be in the sun for a long period of time.

She's in remission right now and is doing great. She's been out of HS for 4.5 years and her hair has completely grown back. She's engaged, graduating college next month, and is working at the Lupus Foundation of PA.

She lives a normal life now, as normal as you can live when your body aches like a 70 year old's.

It can be beaten. If she's strong willed, she can make it.

You can be a carrier of it and never "get it". My bestfriend's mom is a carrier but it doesnt affect her. It's something you're born with.

Here's some statistics from Lupus.org:
*About 5 percent of the children born to individuals with lupus will develop the illness.

*Although lupus can strike men and women of all ages, 90% of individuals diagnosed with the disease are women

*Lupus is two to three times more prevalent among people of color, including African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, and Native Americans.

pardon my ignorance. from what i understand what this guy has is passed through male genes/chromosomes (i sucked at biology) and there's a higher risk of it developing but probably not until later in life. anyhow, at least the guy called and my little brother's doctors know to keep an eye out for certain things.

From the Lupus.org site, again:

*We suspect (but do not have scientific proof) that people inherit something from their parents that predisposes them to develop lupus. They are not necessarily pre-destined to develop lupus, but they may be more susceptible. At the present time, there are no genetic tests to determine who is susceptible and who is not.

*Only 10 percent of lupus patients will have a close relative (parent or sibling) who already has or may develop lupus. Statistics show that only about 5% of the children born to individuals with lupus will develop the illness.

*Although lupus is known to occur within families, there is no known gene or genes which are thought to cause the illness.
