Gun People....
I am considering a Bushmaster AR-15 .223 for competition target shooting. BUT, what I have recently been told is that AK's are far more reliable and nearly as accurate. I know I can probably save a bundle if I go for the AK, but I don't know if I believe the whole more accurate thing...whatdya think??
Most of the guys I shoot with are using hand guns or shot guns, 50 cal or 308 win 223 .17HMR rifles or 22's. No one in the group uses an AR-15's and a few of these guys are from Nevada where they are legal. I shoot comp handgun on a combat course and its alot of fun
depends on what type of shooting. AR's are very accurate and you get what you pay for. YOu can customize one to sharp shoot by getting the m16 upper receiver with the long barrel and scope, or you can do competition shooting at closer range with and M4 upper. AK's are great if you like to plink and try to hit targets at med range. Its a much heavier rifle, doesn't need to be cleaned as much and doesn't have the customization that an M4 has. The rounds for an AK are cheaper and you dun have to worry about if they are russian or american made, it will work fine. I like the AR's personally because I can customize it to the way I feel like shooting at the time.

compeition target shooting, me thinks an AR-15 is a bad platform.
its designed as a combat weapon, being comforitable and relatively light. It is capable of very tight groupings, but for competition there are better options.
nobody shots 50cal for compeition, rounds are $2-3 per.
.308 is what military/police snipers use usually. .22 and .17hrm are very accurate as well, but I don't know about their prospects as long range target.

Yeah the .17 is very, very accurate. The .204 is a new claiber that is patented by Ruger, but they are also manufactured by Remington.
It is a .223 bullet necked down to hold a 32 gr. bullet. Over 4000 fps. Very accurate also. You should see what it does to a groundhog....
