Off-roading (totally non-honda)
Well i was foolin around my in Xterra today, seeing where i coudl go and what i could do, and i was scaling this steep dirt hill, started to roll back, and when i got back to level ground, i noticed that my engine was off. Anybody know why this happened? thanks, even tho its a nissan, and about off-roading.
Manual or auto?
Either way it is probably because you had it in gear and were doing what is known as compression braking. On steep inclines if the gear is in a forward gear and you compression brake going backwards it causes reverse flow and the engine stops.
Perfectly normal.

It happens all the time so don't sweat it. Trying to get up Back to Back here at TSF you see people doing the same thing and having to compression brake to back down the hill again, sometimes 5, 6, or 7 times in a row because it is just that steep.
