I definitely don't think it comes naturally... but your driving skills apply to all forms of driving, once you aquire them.

The real test is your first autocross... you may think your a good driver, but when a stock 84 crx dx runs circles around you and you finish dead last in your class, you see your skills for what they are. I've nearly killed myself (not using the term lightly) several times due to driving incompetence, and only now after 3 years of autocrossing, do I realize that it takes lots of time and dedication to really get it. But I'm a much safer driver for it, and better at riding motocycles too.

consider this. you are a small tiny insignificant spec of a fish in a vash ocean of drivers.

right now you think you are a good driver :blah: :blah:

until you try to compare yourself with those who actually have skill don't say anything about your imaginary driving skills.

here is a short story. beginning of this year I was at an autox. it was first or second event of the year. Some of the cars in the same class as me were GT2 and 911TT. Both are driven by excellent drivers. 911 TT driver is better than the GT2 drivers (2 driver car). At that event, I was able to read the course very well and make the car work for me. I was 3seconds behind the fastest time in my class. As I was leaving grid, I passed the 911TT driver and he gave me a thumbs up.

I talked to my friend who has been winning our regions FSP class for a few years now and he told me the following. You are not quite fast yet, but you are getting there.

Again I do not consider myself to be a fast driver or a good driver. Those guys are good drivers.

not just any experience. you can drive on public roads for 30years and still freeze up.

natural instinct is the wrong thing to do 99.99% of the time.

:werd: natural instinct is what tells you to slam on the brakes whenever anything goes wrong... in most cases thats absolutely the worst thing you could do.

i remember one time it was rainy and i hit this turn and romped on the gas halfay thru and i started sliding foward instead of turning, so i was heading straight for the curb. my natural instint told me to let off the gas, do not press on the brake and jerk the steering wheel to the right...well, it worked, lol.

doesn't mean what you did was the right thing. but you didn't get away with it as does most of the general population.
