i have a job interview at UPS
I just got off of work at UPS an hour ago. I say it's a great job. Good pay, rewarding benefits, and it isn't that hard physically. Around here, you start at 8.50, work for a 30 day probationary period, and get a raise to 9.00. From there, you can be a supe and earn 1100/month, or you can get an extra dollar (10.00) by memorizing a bunch of cities/zipcodes/etc. You can also keep on loading/unloading trailers and not get a raise or promotion. From there, you get yearly raises (at least .50, some get over 1.00/yr depending on seniority), and supervisors get raises for kissing ass... At least that's how it works around here. It's different in different parts of the country. I think agent87 knows what your wages would be, etc because he's in the same state as you.
I opted to stay in the union and I really am glad that I chose to do it that way. I make more money than my current supervisor, who started working for UPS one month before I did:exnbp:. I also get better benefits (my one month vacation vs his two weeks, my free insurance vs his insurance that he has to pay for monthly etc). I also have more job stability because I'm in the union. It's hard work, but I'm no stranger to hard work. No disrespect to Jae, but if you feel that you're being worked to hard, then don't work so hard. It's as simple as that. There are supervisors that get greedy that push forward when you're pulling back, and there are supervisors that know the "compromise" who know that you are gonig to work at your speed. For those greedy supervisors, you have to tell them how much work you can do, and how much flow you can't keep up with.
Also, as far as union dues go, there is a $100 initiation fee in my locality. They just took $50 out of my first two paychecks for that. There are also monthly dues, which can be up to two hours of payroll per month. The thing is that our union doesn't make those deductions on our paychecks when they don't need the funding. So far, I paid less than $100 this year. My two hours of pay per month would be well over $200 by now if they took out the maximum deduction.

I guess UPS works different in different parts of the country or maybe they just changed there ways. I was going to be a sup. I submitted my essay and all the paper works and was approved. Then 9/11 came and then anthrax shortly after. Once they started sending Anthrax i said im out PEACE!!! I am not the one to take risks.
The sups was cool except for where i worked. Of course you might know as a primary sorter its mandatory that you sort 1,000 packages in hour. Now in order to do that you have to bust ya balls. On a good nite i would sort 1,100 packages an hour. When i was there every month it was 17 dollars out ya check and 25 out of each check for 8 weeks for union initiation. Most of the time i was lucky to work 20 hours there.
Dont worry Bretcson know disrespect taken. I wish you all the best at UPS.
I still believe it stands for UnderPaid Slave

) so after all of the work is done, I do odd jobs that supes want done until I get ~4.9 hours. We also have available double shifts, which are awesome. Overtime pay until the next shift is done, and you get overtime until the next shift starts (5~6 hours of overtime), which equates to an extra $70 or so on the check. Not to shabby. I usually do that maybe once per week.
updates...i went to the interview and the lady interviewing me was hot so that was a bonus
