You're all scared, but its needed. Most country's have this.

BTW: size of the military is being decreased, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Nah I was never worried. Never in a million years would it be passed I think. I can imagine there'd be massive riots in Cali at least or something.

Scenario:

All nations require the draft. My brother gets called by the US army since he is an American citizen by birth and I get called by the Irish army because I am an Irish citizen by birth. For some odd reason Ireland and the US gets into war and my brother and I are in the frontline. Would I kill my own blood? Never... thats the whole reason this draft thing and this whole concept of war frightens me.

Uh the bill was already defeated in the senate today almost unanimously, and it was proposed by Charley Rangle. Try doing your own research through google. This is a scare tactic cooked up by the Kerry campaign to scare kids and old people.

I'm actually very pro-draft. I didn't seriously consider joining the military because it's an economic, educational and social setback, especially with the career path I've chosen. If there was a draft, people that were drafted would not be sent to the "front lines"...they would be the ones loading and unloading trucks, refueling airplanes, etc etc so that we could free up "regular" soldiers for harder tasks. The military would be more acceptable in society and wouldn't be looked at as a resort for those who couldn't get into a good college, which unfortuanetly it is today.

If I was drafted I'd serve my country in a split second

That is by far the stupidest thing I've ever heard. You can be "morally objected" to the war, meaning that you wouldnt see any combat. They've always had lots of them. You could defect to Ireland, he could defect to the US, etc etc...my head hurts.

Christ looking at this thread you people really don't know about anything going on in this country. Please don't vote until you read some newspapers or something.

Take a step or two back, remove the blinders and look at the picture again. The scenario I painted is a very real scenario that has been played over and over again in many a war. The army in any nation teaches you to kill with no remorse, I raised the what if question and its not been answered yet. What would you do if you had to raise that gun to the head of your own blood? Would you pull the trigger? Its a moralistic question, some would say yes because its in the name of the country and others will say no because blood is thicker than anything a country has to offer.

Edit and don't tell me I don't know anything. My father's best friend who is like an uncle to me served this country in WWII and the Korean war. He watched his friends die as the Germans torpedoed boat after boat. The freedom you take for granted came partly thanks to the great men that served the country during that day. Trust me when I hear a 80 year old veteran tell me he believes this country is going to hell I sit and listen. I have done hours of research and have found nothing more than a line or two here and there mentioned about him, yet we accolade the soldiers of today like they are some immortal heroes. I've gone to many a reunion with him and boarded the ships he sailed on and realized that never in a million years would I have the will power to survive that. Less than 30 seconds and you were dead once you hit the water, it was swift and when he tells me of the guys he knew who were never found I realize how sickening it is.
