Default compressor talk got me in trouble, how big?

i think my girl is plannin to get me a compressor... but i dont know for sure

either way i might have killed my chances last nite

long story short, there is a 30 gal upright at sears on sale, i told her about it. she told me for my use i wouldnt need anything that big but me - not trusting that if she was gonna get me one she would do some research - denied it and said no you gotta go big.

then i asked a friend and he said i wouldnt want anything other than 100 gal or it would always be runnin and since it would be next to me while i worked, i wouldnt want it to run....

i told her and she got mad, now she says even if she was considering getting me a compressor, she wasnt gonna get me somethin even 30 gal, and now she didnt think anything she got me would make me happy cuz id say it wasnt big enough....

im stuck!

what size compressor is "big enough" i dont need anything crazy that cant operate a spray booth or 6 stall garage, just something to run a ratchet off of, maybe a grinder and an impact gun, of course not all at the same time.

input, please!

Um, a grinder is going to suck up a lot of air, waay more than a spray booth would. I think I have the compressor you're talking about. 30gal upright craftsman, right? I got it for $300 and it came with an impact wrench, impact hammer, and a tq rachet.

Anyways, your best be is to look at tools that you would use, and compare its cfm consumption to the compressors' cfm output. I'll tell you right now that the 30gal won't be able to handle a grinder or DA gun. I have to run it for a minute, let it rest, run it, let it rest, etc.

:werd:

We have a 25 gal, it works just fine. We've used a grinder on it, regular impact tools, air hammers, etc.

thats the one. using a grinder would be occasional, maybe even rare. primary uses would be air ratchet and impact gun.

Well, then you should be ok. Prolonged use of DA or grinders on that compressor will make it run out of air, so you have to let it rest every once in a while. If you're painting, you should be OK with an HPLV gun. I just painted my car this weekend

Its not that hard, just make sure it's warm enough in your garage (at least 75F, the hotter the better).
