There's also Native Command Queueing that should become more supported in the next year (basically a SATA drive can be smart enough to go get the closest piece of info in the queue, rather than simple the next one that came in). Should see a pretty good jump in HD performance with it. I know the 74Gig Raptors support it but I don't know if the controllers are available yet.

 

Don't waste money on the most expensive optical drives. Lite-on, which used to be the crappiest cd burner on the market, is now pretty good.

And SCSI is really quite a bit more expensive than serial ATA, but not faster, as I recall.

Get a 256 meg video card if you want to play Doom 3.

 

mobo: i reccomend abit. i had a craptacular asus p4p800 lux and it sucked. it kept freezing on me. it wasn't over heating either. I'd put a 75% load on it and it would freeze . I got a abit ic7g and never had any real problem since. I'm just going to ebay the dumb asus mobo

proc: i like intel myself, but that's cause I do alot of work with video. if you're a gamer, go with amd

vid card: I got a 9600aiw.:dunno:

memory: I'd get 2 gb of ddr

hd's: raptors :drool:

case: ummmm, antec. simple and effective. usually come with a great power supply

optical drives: get a nec 3500 dvdrw. they have the best laser out IMO, and as always, the fw can be speedhacked. liteon makes great dvdrw drives now as well

I should have clarified. I sent it back to asus and they're in the process of sending me a new one.

 

of course you can! you can also judge companies by what people heard/read on the internet and posted in forums.

i calculate that by the year 2010 i will not be dealing with any companies!
