Default Engagement Rings

Some curious questions from a "friend" who is going to propose to his girlfriend very soon about engagement rings. Any and all input is appreciated.

1) What's a good range to spend? I've heard varying formulas on how to compute the price of the ring.

2) Aside from the obvious (Tiffany's), what are good places (online or store) or brands to look at?

Thanks in advace HANers.

I've always heard 3 months salary is about what you should pay.

Unless you make tons of money, I recommend NOT going to Tiffany's.

I know a few people that dropped about $2k on them at local places.

If that's the norm or less... my girl is getting a twist tie. h:

I can't afford $2k for a ring.

The norm from what I know is more than 2k by far.

I am with you on this one........I spent a bit ( ) more than 2K on mine/my wifes. haha

On the other hand, I would say get what you can confortably afford. IMHO it is just crazy to go way beyond your means on a ring. Sure you are going to have it forever, but to put yourself in a bad way (i.e. spend to much) is not the right way to "start" a marriage. She is going to love whatever you get her - especially if it is a surprise. And you can always get a new diamond at a future point (i.e. anniversary) and make the old one into say a necklace or something like that.

Edit: I have always heard about the 2 month rule - never heard about 3 months

depends on your income, of course. and 3 months salary must be a new one, because everyone i know quotes 2 months. either way, it's a ridiculous amount of money to spend on a piece of metal and carbon.
